The Comparison of Characteristics between a General Juvenile Delinquency Group and a Mentally Ill Adolescent Criminal Group

Abstract
Objective£ºRecently, the number of criminals and frequency of major criminals in mentally ill adolescent are increasing. This study is conducted to reveal their characteristics and to serve basic data.

Method£ºJuvenile delinquency group who received mental evaluation for grave criminals, adolescents group under custody of General Juvenile School with no mental illness other than conduct disorder, and other group under custody of Medical Juvenile School with mental illness are compared. Based on the mental evaluation records and criminal records, the socio-demographic data, crime characteristics, and psychiatric diagnoses of them were analyzed statistically by SPSS WIN 10.0.

Results£º 1) 97 criminal adolescents(86 males and 11 females) with mental illness and 59 adolescents(all male) under custody of General Juvenile School. 2) In the group who received mental evaluations at NFPH, mental retardation was the most frequently diagnosed disorder, followed by drug abuse, depression, ADHD, organic personality disorder, schizophrenia, sex related disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder, usually accompanied by conduct disorder. 3) In the group under custody of Medical Juvenile School, mental retardation, ADHD, depression, organic personality disorder were diagnosed in order. 4) Adolescents group with mental illness was older, and started to commit crime in older age than adolescents group of General Juvenile School. They showed lower intelligence quotient, had less accomplice in crime and legal problems, but higher tendency to have major delinquency.

Conclusion£º The mentally ill adolescent criminals had less legal problems, but higher tendency to have major delinquency£»therefore, systematic interventio n including their treatment and rehabilitation is needed.
